If You Didnt Get in Early Decision

For those who didnt get into their early decision school, its going to be ok. Here are a couple things you should hear. 1) It sucks but dont blame yourself You worked really hard and you told the school you were their top choice by applying early decision, and yet they denied you admission. This feeling is really awful but dont take it personally. Given the nature of college admissions, colleges end up having to deny hundreds of highly qualified applicants. Its not your fault that you didnt get in. So go easy on yourself. Not having an extra 150 points on the SAT or not having another extracurricular are not what kept you from attending your top choice. Dont agonize over things you have no control over. 2) There are other schools A lot of different factors may have contributed to a certain college being your top choice. From family legacy, location, prestige, available programs/majors, and cost, if you think about it long enough, its easy to put one college on a pedestal. However, that pedestal is false. Its not fun getting rejected from a school you really liked but trust me when I say there are plenty of other schools out there that meet your criteria and could be a good fit for you. I know people who attended their early decision school and ended up hating it and transferring. So dont feel like its the end if you dont get into that top choice school. 3) You have to be resilient As difficult as it can be to deal with rejection, you have to be resilient. You only have a few weeks before regular decision applications are due. Don’t give up on college applications just because you didn’t get into one school. Be strong and put maximum effort into the rest of your essays and supplements. You really don’t want to let one hiccup derail the entire college application process. The hard work will pay off and you will end up somewhere great come March/April. Seriously, don’t let one rejection make you feel lesser about yourself. Your dedication throughout high school will pay off in ways you cannot even imagine yet. So don’t be too down and good luck with the rest of the process. You are going to do great!

Theseus, Great Hero of Greek Mythology

Theseus is one of the great heroes of Greek mythology, a prince of Athens who battled numerous foes including the Minotaur, the Amazons, and the Crommyon Sow, and traveled to Hades, where he had to be rescued by Hercules. Medea sends Theseus on an impossible errand to capture the Marathonian Bull, but Theseus completes the errand and returns to Athens alive.   As the prince, Theseus takes on the Minotaur, a half-man, half-bull monster owned by King Minos and to whom Athenian maidens and youths were sacrificed. With the help of the princess Ariadne, he slays the Minotaur and rescues the young people, but fails to provide a signal to his father that all is well—to change the black sails to white ones. Aegeas leaps to his death and Theseus becomes king. King Theseus   Becoming a king does not suppress the young man, and his adventures while king include an attack on the Amazons, after which he carries off their queen Antiope. The Amazons, led by Hippolyta, in turn invade Attica and penetrate into Athens, where they fight a losing battle. As a close friend of Pirithous, the king of Larissa, Theseus helps him in the battle of the Lapithae against the centaurs.   Pirithous develops a passion for Persephone, the Queen of the Underworld, and he and Theseus travel to Hades to abduct her. But Pirithous dies there, and Theseus is trapped and must be rescued by Hercules.   Theseus as Mythical Politician As king of Athens, Theseus is said to have broken up the 12 separate precincts in Athens and united them in a single commonwealth. Downfall   Theseus and Pirithous carry off the legendary beauty Helen of Sparta, and he and Pirithous take her away from Sparta and leave her at Aphidnae under Aethras care, where she is rescued by her brothers the Dioscuri (Castor and Pollux).   The Dioscuri set up Menestheus as Theseus successor—Menestheus would go on to lead Athens into battle over Helen in the Trojan Wars. Literary Analysis: Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet as a Historical Fiction In Jamie Ford’s historical fiction Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, this split narrative focuses on two eras: 1942 and 1986. Within these era’s, Ford’s novel focuses on a Chinese boy, Henry Lee, and what it was like to grow up in the international district with prejudice everywhere, especially in his own family being a first generation American. His novel tells the story of Henry, as well as a Japanese girl by the name of Keiko. The novel tells the story of these two young friends and the hardships faced when the government sends Keiko and her family away to the Japanese internment camps in the Northwest in the 1940’s. His novel displays the effects†¦show more content†¦In addition, Henry does not easily overcome the social mores of 1942; again something MacLeod says that â€Å"bad† historical fiction makes it seem easy to overcome the social mores of the era. First of all, meeting MacLeod’s criteria for a â€Å"good† historical fiction†, Ford’s novel does not â€Å"make overt rebellion seem nearly painless and nearly always successful†. Ford displays this when Keiko is taken away Henry keeps some of her belongings safe under his dresser, as well as when Henry sneaks into two different Japanese internment camps searching for Keiko. Though this rebellion seems rewarded at first, as we continue reading we see how, by going to the internment camps and keeping Keiko’s belongings, Henry unknowingly starts a chain of events leading to one, giant consequence. Because Henry keeps Keiko’s belonging, and later writes her letters, his mother finds out and tells Henry’s father. Henry comes home one day and finds his parents at the kitchen table waiting for him with all of Keiko’s pictures spread all over the table. Because of this, Henry’s father gives him a choice: walk out the door and no longer be part of the family or stay and forget about Keiko. In the end Henry chooses to follow his heart and leaves his family (182-185). This forever affects the relationship between Henry and his father, even on his father’s deathbed. Gender role plays an important role in Sandra Cisneros’s novel The House on Mango Street. The role of women in a patriarchal society is one of the most important themes in the novel. The main character Esperanza, along with other women have to face a lot of difficulties caused by gender inequality. Esperanza s disappointment begins as she moves into the new community and witness the way women are treated. Having read the definition of terrorism, I was surprised that the principal target of the terrorist was the government rather than just innocent civilians. This was interesting as it made me think about terrorism from the opposite point of view, from that of the â€Å"terrorists† whom we fear. In their point of view, all that the Western countries do is like a terrorist attack on them, trying to affect and repair their government. From this idea, my group then wanted to explore the nature and upbringing of the various eastern countries. We wanted to explore this idea through a series of moving images to show the progression of a developing child into becoming a terrorist. We decided that in order to effectively emphasize their upbringing, we would have to use satire and perhaps even some humour. Grace had the idea of teaching children to make a bomb, using a light patronising tone: being an obvious connotation to a primary school teacher. Security almost everywhere was stepped up and there was a lot of changes taking place. If you flew on an airplane before 9/11 and then flew again after, you would definitely notice the diffe rence. There used to be a fairly fast security check out at the airports. Now, there are hours of security procedures that are required before you are able to pass security and board your flight. Simple things such as fingernail clippers could be confiscated because they pose a threat. This isn’t only limited to airports though. When you attend a large event, such as, lets say a football game, you will noticed a high presence of security there too. None of these security measures existed before terrorism. It’s all a matter of cause and effect. Terrorism has been around for a very long time, but has been on the rise in the last 10 years. Nobody knows what causes a terrorist attack. Some people say it has to do with race, nationality, or even religion. If a terrorist doesn’t like the way that a government works, that right there could be another reason. Due to all the terrorist attacks, security almost everywhere has been upped. Terrorism has no warnings, and can happen anytime. It endangers the life of every person in the United States. Since there is no warning, the best thing is to just know what to do when a terrorist hits, and with all the recent attacks, and the security being upped, hopefully we are just one step closer to solving this problem.
